Publication: Material Testing

New Publication from the Hylley Research Project

We are pleased to share that our latest paper has been published in Advanced Engineering Materials:
“A Novel Approach to Estimate the Transition Temperature via Dynamic Nanoindentation”

Key Highlights:
✅ Developing a material-efficient method to estimate transition temperatures associated with the ductile-to-brittle transition.
✅ Investigating the temperature-dependent deformation behavior of ferritic and austenitic steels between -150 °C and +75 °C.
✅ Transition temperatures in ferritic steel shift towards higher temperatures with increasing strain-rate, while austenitic steel showed no transition.
✅ Using the stiffness ratio from dynamic nanoindentation as an indicator of changes in plastic deformation behavior.

This work provides a promising proof of concept for a complementary approach to conventional ductile-to-brittle transition testing. By substantially reducing material requirements, the method opens up new possibilities for comparative investigations in material development, particularly when only limited quantities are available.
